SHIKAI Dai “Error and Trial”
2026.8.8 Sat. – 8.16 Sun.

Contemporary antique collective “Tatami” leader and calligrapher Dai Okumura and Mashiko-based ceramic artist Dai Shikai come together for the two-person exhibition Error and Trial.
Okumura moves his brush across old washi paper, guided by the feeling of the moment. Shikai digs his own clay and begins by simply firing it. Rather than seeking a predetermined answer, both artists begin their practice by embracing errors, unexpected outcomes, and chance.

I started making Japanese calligraphy almost by accident, with nothing more than a brush, ink, and old Japanese paper.
Sometimes I draw from things that catch my attention; other times I simply move the brush without thinking.
That’s how I continue to discover my own calligraphy.
OKUMURA Dai

I dig my own clay and fire my work in a wood-fired kiln. I begin by imagining how I want to fire the clay I have dug, but most of the time, things don’t turn out the way I expect. Sometimes I get so frustrated that I think, “I can’t fire the kiln anymore…” But after a while, another idea comes to me, and I start making ceramics again.

OKUMURA Dai
Born in Saitama Prefecture, Dai Okumura is currently based in Isumi, Chiba, where he works as an antique dealer and calligrapher. He is also a surfer and the leader of the contemporary antique collective “Tatami Antiques.”
In 2022, an encounter with a large quantity of old washi paper while sourcing antiques led him to begin creating calligraphic works. Using sumi ink on old washi paper, he creates works with a free and intuitive approach to brushwork.

SHIKAI Dai
Born in 1992 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Dai Shikai began studying ceramics at the Tochigi Prefectural Ceramic Technology Support Center in 2017 and continued to develop his practice in Mashiko. He became independent in 2019 and is currently based in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture.
His process begins with searching for and digging his own clay. He forms his works using locally gathered raw clay and fires them primarily in wood-fired kilns, including anagama kilns. His work embraces the inherent qualities of the clay and the transformations brought about by flame and ash during firing.
