『TROPICAL KISOPOTAMIA /

OKUNO HIROSHI “TROPICAL KISOPOTAMIA”
2024.7.6sat – 7.14sun 12:00 ~ 19:00
This is a solo exhibition of OKUNO Hiroshi, a ceramic artist based in Kiso, Nagano Prefecture.
A story created by the artist. Works inspired by the stories of the tropical xopotamian civilization that flourished 30,000 years ago B.C. will be on display at Water Rhinoceros. These delightful works are the result of a chaotic mixture of civilization, mythology, space, and Nagano Prefecture’s Kiso. This will be his first solo exhibition in Tokyo. Please come and see it.
Tropical Kissopotamian civilization flourished 30,000 BC. An advanced civilization based on the worship of clay figures flourished in the Kisso River basin. Astronomy and surveying developed with pyramid full moon-head clay figures, hearts were dedicated to heart-head clay figures, and UFO clay figures from other planets landed on crop circle clay figures. During festivals, people offer seafood to the Don Posey clay figurine to give thanks for blessings. Birds were deified and people worshipped the bird-man clay figurines.
The village of Okuwa, Kiso-gun, Nagano Prefecture, where the production is currently based, is also an undiscovered Jomon site village with more than 50 Jomon ruins excavated. Many of the earthenware excavated in the village are on display at the Okuwa Village History and Ethnography Museum. The village has also produced a group of works named “Okuwa Pottery” in the romantic belief that the people of Okuwa Village in the Jomon period might have produced clay figurines and earthenware by firing the village’s soil.
The works exhibited at mizusai this time were created by imagining the mythical world of an imaginary ancient tropical Chisopotamian civilization. I hope you will enjoy seeing various tropical Chimimouryou clay figurines and earthenware, such as “Snake Ooki Koshikogyo Dogu,” the god of wood, “Don Posei Dogu,” the god of the sea, “Striped Sponge Turtle,” the god of rivers, and “Red Striped Turtle,” a turtle with a neck that can be taken off.
