HORI Takaharu Rebooting ーCut off and restartー
2023.8.19sat – 9.2sat
This is a solo exhibition of HORI Takaharu, a ceramic artist who creates refined silhouette white porcelain works based on the structure and form of insects.
A day in the life of Mr. HORI begins with taking care of hundreds of insects raised from eggs and larvae and catching insects to feed them. His knowledge of insects gained from these daily activities is astonishingly rich. The forms he creates by imagining the evolution of insects are all convincing and realistic.
In this exhibition, visitors can enjoy his new “abstract works with a sense of life,” which are more abstracted insect forms, as well as works on three themes: “works imagining the evolution of insects” and “vessels utilizing the structure of insects.
The new work, “Abstract with a Sense of Life,” is challenging, and it represents a new determination on the part of Mr. HORI. We can expect to see more evolution in this work in the future.
-To continue creating insect works-
Ever since I was a child, my knowledge and curiosity about insects was above average. Then I encountered the exoskeleton-like technique of casting, which naturally led me to make insects. However, when I made them, I was conscious of the deformation of the ecological evolutionary system, but my work was noticeably additive, and I felt that if I continued in this way, my work would only be “detailed,” and that I would be moving away from what I was aiming for. In order to break away from my previous ideas, I decided to start with a subtractive approach and create works that have a certain life in their abstract forms.
I feel that I will be able to gradually master addition and subtraction, to create works that combine both, and when I am able to do so, I feel that I will be closer to what I am aiming for.
