[Silverpoint, mixed media (tempera and oil-resin paint)]
The composition of flowers entwined with ribbons is based on the Greek sculpture Laocoön and His Sons. According to Miyazaki, “Flowers are always struggling—desperate, and yet beautiful.”
Cotton cloth is mounted on wood, then sealed with dozens of layers of a ground made from chalk (white earth from the Cretaceous period), which is carefully polished to achieve a smooth surface. Upon this ground, a preliminary drawing is executed in silverpoint, a drawing tool that predates the invention of the pencil. The central flower petals are then painted using a combination of tempera and oil paint.
The frame is an original wooden piece. Its layered metal-like design is created by applying copper leaf over a plaster ground and fuming it to produce a rich patina. This is a superb example in which tradition and deviation coexist, reflecting the sensibility of a frame maker deeply versed in the fine arts.
※the artwork will be shipped after the exhibition period ends, from December 27 onward.
