The figure depicted is an explorer, capturing the expression of a scholar at the very moment they discover a truth. “When I depict a person, I prefer to express a state that contains some emotion—a fleeting moment of awe or surprise,” says Miyazaki. The work is rendered in ink on Japanese paper, with the density and fineness of the strokes conveying a sense of three-dimensionality.
