宮崎さんは20代の頃から北アフリカに通い、少年時代より憧れてきた荒野や砂漠を一貫して描いてきました。本作は、砂漠に広がる果樹園という幻想的な情景を主題とした、水彩素描による三部作の1枚です。
水彩紙にインクで陰影を施し、水彩絵具で彩色しています。

[Ink and watercolor on paper]
Since his twenties, Miyazaki has traveled repeatedly to North Africa, consistently depicting the wilderness and deserts he had admired since boyhood. This work is one of a three-part watercolor drawing series, centered on the fantastical vision of an orchard spreading across the desert.
Shading is applied in ink on watercolor paper, and the image is then colored with watercolor pigments.
