This work is also an experiment in which Tanaka, who has rarely taken the human figure as a central subject until now, turns their gaze toward new possibilities within themselves. Quietly rendered across the composition is a sense that might be described by the Japanese word awai—a fleeting yet unmistakably present feeling that seems on the verge of vanishing.
