旧約聖書に登場する預言者サムエルの少年時代、神から託された、耳鳴りがするほど切迫した重要な啓示を受け取った瞬間の決意した表情を描いています。
キャンバス地は、何十層にもおよぶ白亜（白亜紀の白い土）地塗りで目を消し、磨き込んで滑らかな面に仕上げ、その全体に金箔を施した後、テンペラ絵具と油絵具を重ねて描いています。
額は、現在は作り手の途絶えた仕事による、人工漆（カシュー）仕上げです。下地の滑らかさは言うまでもなく、気の遠くなるほどの回数を重ね塗りし、絹で顔が映るほどまで丹念に磨き上げることで、この気品ある艶が生まれている逸品です。

Gold leaf, mixed media (tempera and oil-resin paint)
It depicts the young prophet Samuel from the Old Testament, capturing the determined expression on his face at the moment he receives a crucial revelation from God—so urgent it seems almost to make his ears ring.
The canvas is prepared with dozens of layers of chalk ground (white earth from the Cretaceous period), meticulously filled and polished to create a smooth surface. Gold leaf is then applied over the entire ground, after which layers of tempera and oil paint are built up to form the image.
The frame is finished with synthetic lacquer (cashew lacquer), produced by a craft tradition whose makers no longer exist. Beyond the flawless ground preparation, the lacquer is applied in an almost unimaginable number of layers and patiently polished with silk until it reflects the viewer’s face, resulting in a refined and dignified luster.
