This bowl is boldly faceted from a rare piece of Kurogaki (black persimmon wood).
Persimmon wood is naturally pale in color, but on very rare occasions, striking black patterns emerge through natural processes. This extraordinary wood is known as Kurogaki, a material said to occur in only a few hundred trees.
Its ink-painting-like beauty has been treasured in Japan for centuries. Kurogaki has long been used for tea utensils and the interiors of tea rooms, and can even be found among the treasures preserved in the Shōsō-in, the imperial repository dating back to the eighth century.
