吉川和人 YOSHIKAWA Kazuto / YSK-2 朴古木ローテーブル2

ホオノキの大木のコブを天板に用いたローテーブルです。
コブは、虫や動物による傷、あるいは菌の侵入に対する樹木の防御反応によって生まれるもの。複雑に入り組んだ木目や高い密度、豊かな樹液を宿し、通常の木部にはない豊かな表情を備えています。この材は、吉川和人さんのもう一つの工房がある三重県の山あいで、約40年前に伐採されたホオノキを大切に保管していた方から受け継いだもの。その貴重な材を丁寧に整え、天板として新たな命を吹き込んでいます。

This low table features a tabletop crafted from a burl of a large magnolia tree.
Burls are formed as a natural defense response of trees against wounds caused by insects or animals, as well as the intrusion of fungi. They contain intricately interwoven grain patterns, exceptional density, and rich deposits of sap, creating a depth and character rarely found in ordinary wood.
This precious material was inherited from a person in the mountains of Mie Prefecture, where Kazuhito Yoshikawa has another workshop. The magnolia tree was felled approximately 40 years ago and had been carefully preserved ever since. Through meticulous preparation and craftsmanship, Yoshikawa has given this rare piece of wood a new life as a tabletop.
